The Truth Behind Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise's Divorce

We might never know what really cause their marriage break down, but one thing is for sure, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are truly over.

In a shocking announcement today Katie's lawyer confirmed that she has filed for divorce from Tom. In a statement Katie's rep said her main concern is their six year old daughter Suri.

'This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest.'

And it has no emerged that Katie is looking for soul custody of their daughter. According to gossip website TMZ, the actress has asked for legal custody, primary residential custody and a 'suitable amount' of child support from her husband.

Katie wants sole custody of Suri

In a separate statement Mission Impossible star Tom has said that he is saddened by Katie's decision to end the marriage. His rep said:

'Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children.'
Tom is currently in Iceland filming his new sci-fi movie Oblivion, but made sure to release a statement. Katie filed documents in New York this week citing 'irreconcilable differences'.

Apparently Katie is also asking for a division of property in the divorce documents, although there is a significant pre-nuptial agreement that is based on California law. The couple are worth around $275 million - much of that owing to Tom's box office success.

Friends of Tom have said that he had 'not seen' the split coming. But sources insist that she did tell her husband of five-and-a-half years that she was filing for divorce.

It's all over

Although it is a shock to most people, the couple have not been seen together in public for almost three months and Katie did not join Tom as he promoted his recent movie Rock of Ages.

The final arguments seem to have been over where Cruise was going to spend his 50th birthday on Tuesday. He told her that he was planning to be on the set of his latest film Oblivion, in Iceland, and Katie then said she had had enough.

One Hollywood source said she had been ‘utterly miserable with Tom for months, if not years’.   The marriage has been in a bad way for the last year and sources say they have lived separate lives for months.

There was controversy when Katie and Tom got together initially. Friends of hers were worried when Tom convinced her to join Scientology, something Tom is very serious about.

Apparently Katie was disconnected from her friends and family, which was suggested by the Scientology teachings and Tom himself.

Katie looked strained in recent weeks

When the romance began – Katie had met Tom to discuss the possibility of appearing in Mission Impossible III – she was immediately sent on an intensive and lengthy study course about Scientology.

She was ‘audited’ by Scientology counsellors, and unlike Penelope Cruz and Nicole Kidman before her, she totally embraced the movement. Rumors are that Penelope and Nicole both walked away because of his obsession with the religion.

Sources now say that Katie, who used to have a poster of Tom on her bedroom wall, found that being married to an intense, workaholic, and deeply religious megastar was not what she had hoped.

The pair married in an Italian castle in 2006 with romantic images released to the media that same day. Although Katie was raised Catholic it was a Scientology wedding.

From the outset Katie apparently struggled to settle down in their LA mansion. Tom’s sister Cass and her three sons share the house with Tom and his two adopted children Conor, 17, and Isabella, 19.

Everyone who came through the doors was a Scientologist. An unauthorised biography claimed that Suri was conceived using the frozen sperm of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard.
