Last night Maire Hughes spoke out about her treatment by the Miss Ireland organisation. The Galway girl, originally from Canada went through hell this week after her Miss Ireland 2012 was stripped from her because she was 'too old'.
All week Maire has been declining to comment on the matter, but last night she told RTE chat show host Brendan O'Connor that she felt 'let down' by the organizers.
Maire looked beautiful on the Saturday Night Show |
She also admitted that after she received the call to inform her that she was no longer Miss Ireland, she hasn't heard from Miss Ireland at all, despite trying to contact them.
Last night Maire cleared up rumors that she intentionally lied about her age during the competition in order to win. But on the Saturday Night Show Maire said that she was told by a member of Miss Ireland to lie about her age, and was told that it didn't matter.
Before appearing on the show Maire had a solicitor draw up an official statement. It read:
'I travelled to Castlebar to take part in the Miss Mayo competition on Saturday, April 21, and informed organisers of my true age. It was suggested to me at that competition that it might sound better to say I was 24.
'In fact, the issue of age never arose at all and the event proceeded with all concerned being fully aware of my age. On Wednesday, April 25, 2012 forms were sent to me via email, which contained rules of eligibility.
Maire has had to relinquish her title |
Miss Ireland organizers have continuously denied that they were aware of Maire's true age. But whether or not Maire was coaxed to alter her date of birth or not unfortunately it is all over for the beautiful brunette.

Miss Red Blog would like to wish Maire Hughes the best of luck in the future and a successful career. She has dealt with this upsetting situation with such a great manner and poise.
Now Rebecca will be representing Ireland at the Miss World finals, and hopefully she will do us all proud.
