In an appearance on Live With Regis and Kelly, the actress was asked about dressing up as Barbra Streisand for a recent Harper's Bazaar issue and she commented:
"Yes, I play dress-up! I do it for a living, like a retard!"Uh-oh. A similar incident like this occurred when US President Obama said 'retard' on live TV as well. His spokesperson covered up straight away apologizing. But no word from Jen's rep yet!
Special Olympics spokeswoman Kristen Seckler said of the incident:
"Sadly, people use the word pervasively even if they don't realise it. People with intellectual disabilities have fought their whole lives for understanding and recognition. When people continue to use the R word, it's hurtful"
She added:
"Think before you speak, especially when you're making fun of yourself or others. We have a very passionate group of people advocating for change in their communities and schools to change the use of this word."
